Flutes
In the category of aerophones,
Svaram started to work with the most simple and archaic
forms of wind-instruments and offers clay vessel-flutes,
bamboo pan-pipes, overtone-flutes made of copper and bamboo,
and a primal form of a reed instrument – the Chalimeaux.
Ocarina: The ocarina, is
an ancient flute-like wind instrument. It is one of the
oldest musical instruments on Earth. It usually is made up
of an oval-shaped enclosed space and four to thirteen finger
holes, though there are some variations on the standard
design. It is often ceramic, but many other materials may
also be used, including plastic, wood, glass, and metal. At
Svaram, we make Ocarinas in special clay.
The ocarina is a very old family of instruments, believed to date back some
12,000 years. Ocarina-type instruments have been of particular importance in
Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures (where they are often shaped as animals,
generally birds).
Different notes are produced by covering the holes, opening and closing more or
less of the total hole area. The tone is then produced through the sound hole.
The tone can also be varied by changing the strength with which one blows
through the instrument.
Pan pipes: Amongst the
oldest instruments, originally used by shepherds – the
magical Greek
syrinx, attributed to the nature-god Pan - it can be
found across the globe in South America, China, the South
Pacific and South-Eastern Europe.
A number of tuned pipes,
stopped at one end, are arranged together in the form of a
raft, according to length and corresponding pitch, and are
blown across the top. Various models assembled or in single
pipes) and tunings are available for solo or ensemble play
(where in the fashion of the equatorial African pygmy style
each player is holding only one or two notes) and the
instrument is loved and easily played by children.

Overtone flutes (copper) | |
 |
Overtone flutes: These
modern designed flutes are based on the harmonic principle
of overtones, like one of the oldest found flutes used by
the south African Bushmen, and many of the primitive signal
horns. Depending on the model (bamboo or copper) our
design offers the possibility to produce up to 12 overtones!
Without fingering and fitted with a simple mouthpiece the
single pipe allows even the novice to produce sound
immediately, and with practice of the diaphragmatic
impulsation (increasing air-pressure producing higher
overtones) the flutes invite in an uncomplicated way a
spontaneous richly improvised play.
Chalumeau: This is a
primal form of a clarinet, developed by the German artist
and instrument-builder Ruediger and was introduced by
the master-craftsman himself to our young team in 2006.
Manufactured with selected wood and bamboo this already more
sophisticated and demanding single-reed instrument,
available in diverse, produces a very appealing, warm and
heart-touching tonal quality. Svaram, in collaboration with
Ruediger…. is happy to introduce through it, a new
generation of precisely crafted instrument with
professional, universal appeal.
